Inspired by one of the first recorded hymns of the early Churchknown as The Christ Hymn, which is drawn from Paul’s letter to the Philippiansthis contemporary assembly song evokes a prayerful, meditative quality two ways: by using four repeating words, “Jesus Christ is Lord,” and by remaining on the tonic E in the bass while the chord progression I-bVII-IV-I occurs. It is scored for SATB chorus with descant, keyboard, and guitar.
