Description
Saffron is the second movement of “Suite Seasonings,” a three movement suite commissioned by Stanford University. This movement is a jazz ballad feature for flugelhorn soloist throughout. It’s a slow, pensive, lovely melody, set in an almost polytonal manner. There are many lush sounds reminiscent of Ellington and Kenton, all at the same time. Offering nice contrast as part of the suite, it also would do well as a stand-alone feature. Scored for 5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones and 3 rhythm, it can also be played with just 8 brass.
